KBV warns: Software error discovered in medication plans

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has issued an urgent warning to all medical practices in Germany. There are technical problems with the transfer of medication plans into doctors' computer systems. These errors could lead to patients receiving incorrect information about their medications.

The problem occurs when the so-called "nationwide medication plan" (BMP) is imported into the practice software. This plan contains all the important information about which medications a patient must take. However, due to a software error, the data is sometimes not transferred correctly.

It is particularly critical that the dosage of medications can be displayed incorrectly. For example, if a computer program stores the wrong amount of a heart medication, this can be dangerous for the patient. The KBV emphasizes that patient safety must come first.

The KBV therefore recommends that doctors check the imported data manually immediately. At the moment, one should not rely solely on automatic technology. A quick comparison between the paper plan and the digital system can prevent errors.

This news is also important for patients. They should ask during their next doctor's visit whether their medication plan is stored up to date and correctly in the system. Good communication between doctor and patient remains the best remedy against such technical errors.
