Ecuador: Teachers to receive compensatory rest for working on Saturdays
The Ministry of Education has announced a new measure that benefits teachers in the public system. From now on, teachers who carry out complementary activities on Saturdays will be entitled to compensatory rest. This decision seeks to recognize the additional effort of educators and ensure their personal well-being.
Activities that allow access to this benefit include sporting and cultural events, and training programs organized by educational institutions. According to the Ministry, these tasks are fundamental for the integral development of students, but they require teachers to dedicate time outside their ordinary working hours.
To implement this change, the authorities have defined clear processes. Teachers must officially register the hours worked during the weekend. Subsequently, they will be able to coordinate with the directors of their schools or colleges to take a day off during the following week, ensuring that classes are not affected by their absence.
The main objective of this regulation is to avoid the physical and mental exhaustion of education professionals. By allowing recovery time, the government expects teachers to maintain a high level of motivation and for the quality of teaching in classrooms to improve progressively.
This measure has generated positive reactions among teacher unions, who consider it an important step in valuing their work. The Ministry of Education will continue to supervise the application of this rule throughout the country to ensure that the rights of all workers in the education sector are met.
