UN denounces restrictions against family members in an Ecuador prison
A United Nations (UN) expert has expressed concern over the situation at the Encuentro prison in Ecuador. The special rapporteur criticized measures that limit contact between prisoners and their loved ones. According to the report, these restrictions affect the fundamental rights of detainees and their families.
The main problem centers on the difficulties families face when visiting inmates. In recent months, authorities have implemented stricter controls for security reasons. However, the UN points out that these rules are excessive and hinder the emotional support that prisoners need for their future rehabilitation.
In addition to physical visits, problems with telephone communication and the delivery of basic products have been reported. Family members claim they spend many hours waiting outside the penitentiary center without receiving clear information. This lack of transparency generates distress and tension both inside and outside the prison.
The UN rapporteur reminded that contact with the outside world is an essential human right that must be respected. Although security is a priority for the State, the measures must not punish the families of those detained. The expert called on the Ecuadorian government to review its protocols to ensure dignified and humane treatment within the prison system.
For now, Ecuadorian authorities defend the measures as part of a necessary plan to control violence in the country's prisons. The debate between national security and human rights continues as international organizations closely monitor the evolution of the prison crisis.
