Met Authority: your Friday cools by up to 5 degrees

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority says the hot spell has one more day to run. Wednesday and Thursday bring a slight and temporary rise, with hot to very hot and humid conditions by day and moderate, humid nights. Highs sit at 30 to 33 on the north coast, 35 to 36 across Greater Cairo and the Delta, and 38 to 45 in the south of the country.

Humidity is doing the rest of the work. The authority says the felt temperature runs about two degrees above the reading, so Greater Cairo feels closer to 38 even where the thermometer says 36. From Friday 18 September temperatures start falling across most of the country by 3 to 5 degrees. Greater Cairo and the Delta settle at about 33 through Sunday, feeling like 35. The far south stays hottest, easing from 45 on Wednesday to 39 by Sunday.

The warning that matters for your morning is fog rather than heat. Water fog forms between 4am and 8am on the roads running to and from the north, through Greater Cairo, the Canal cities, central Sinai and northern Upper Egypt, and it can be dense in places. The authority asked drivers to slow down and keep to posted speeds while visibility is low. There is also a chance of light and sometimes moderate rain on Thursday along the northwest coast and the northern Delta, with wind picking up to 30 to 33 kilometres an hour in places.

Autumn begins astronomically on Wednesday 23 September and summer formally ends the day before, so this is the last real heat of the season rather than a new wave. A forecaster at the authority's early warning centre put current readings two to three degrees above normal for the time of year. If you drive before eight in the morning this week, check the authority's own bulletin before you leave, and if you work outdoors, plan around Wednesday and Thursday afternoon rather than Friday.
