Egypt Strengthens Its Regional Role: From the Water Crisis to Security and Diplomatic Cooperation
Egypt is currently witnessing significant diplomatic and security activity aimed at protecting its national interests and regional stability. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi received his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Cairo for an important official visit, reflecting a marked improvement in relations between the two countries. These moves come at a time when Egypt seeks to bolster its position as a key player in the Middle East and Africa.
Regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) file, President el-Sisi emphasized that Egypt's water security is an "existential" issue and a top priority for the state that cannot be compromised. For his part, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he is working to resolve this crisis between Egypt and Ethiopia, indicating his desire to reach a fair agreement that guarantees the rights of all parties to the Nile River waters.
On the security and strategic level, Egypt and Eritrea agreed to increase joint coordination to protect the security of the Red Sea, which is a vital global trade corridor. Sources also revealed Egyptian military cooperation with four Gulf countries to enhance regional security. In a related context, Cairo called on both the United States and Iran to quickly reach a political agreement to avoid any military escalation that could negatively impact regional stability.
On the humanitarian and service front, President el-Sisi stressed that Egypt has never used the refugee issue to achieve political goals; rather, it treats them as guests and calls on the international community to share the burden. On the other hand, the telecommunications sector faced a technical challenge after the submarine cable between Alexandria and Tartus, Syria, was sabotaged, affecting the quality of internet service, which relies heavily on this international route.
These diverse events demonstrate the scale of responsibilities and challenges currently facing the Egyptian state. Between seeking to resolve water crises, developing international relations, and protecting borders, Cairo remains focused on achieving balance and stability, while preserving the rights and interests of the Egyptian people amidst changing regional and international conditions.
