325 pounds a person: how the new food support works

Egypt is preparing to change the way food subsidy reaches families. From January 2027 the plan is that the ration card stops delivering fixed quantities of goods and starts carrying money instead.

Under the system being discussed, a cash amount would be loaded onto the tamween card each month and the holder would choose what to buy with it inside supply outlets, rather than receiving a set list of items. The outlets themselves are to be developed into something closer to small shops, carrying a wider range of products including meat and vegetables alongside the basic goods.

Figures are circulating, and it matters where they come from. Hisham El-Degwy, head of the grocery division of the Giza Chamber of Commerce, has said an individual would probably receive around 225 pounds allocated to bread and 100 pounds for other supply goods, a total of roughly 325 pounds a month per person, and that a card covering four people could therefore carry about 1,300 pounds a month. El-Degwy speaks for a trade body, not for the Ministry of Supply, and the ministry has not published a confirmed amount. Anyone planning a household budget around these numbers should treat them as an expectation from the trade side rather than as a stated entitlement.

One part of the account answers a question many families have been asking. Bread that goes unused would not simply be lost. The value of unclaimed bread would be converted into other supply goods at the real cost of a loaf, put at around 150 piastres, rather than the subsidised price of about 10 piastres. That would let a household redirect the value of bread it does not eat towards things it actually needs.

None of this takes effect soon. The move to cash support has been trailed since June and the target date is January 2027. Cards stay valid and current entitlements continue unchanged until then. The one thing worth doing now is making sure your card details are current, which can be done through supply offices, Egypt Post branches and the Digital Egypt portal, because out-of-date card data is the most common reason a household is left out when a system changes.
