Iran Suspected in Netherlands Attacks as Experts Warn of Expanding Influence

Concerns are rising in the Netherlands over possible Iranian involvement in a series of attacks, including incidents targeting Jewish institutions and a shooting involving a man of Iranian origin in Schoonhoven.

The Internationaal Centrum voor Contraterrorisme (International Centre for Counter-Terrorism – ICCT) has indicated that multiple signs point toward a potential link with Iran, although no definitive proof has yet been established. Dutch Justice Minister ديفيد فان ويل also stated that the possibility of Iranian involvement must be taken seriously, especially given the victim’s criticism of the Iranian regime.

A relatively unknown group called Ashab al-Yamin has claimed responsibility for several antisemitic attacks in the Netherlands, as well as in Belgium and the United Kingdom. According to the ICCT, little is known about the group, but its activities and online presence suggest possible indirect connections to pro-Iranian networks.

Reports indicate that content from the group is being rapidly shared by a militia in Iraq that is aligned with Iran. While direct coordination has not been confirmed, the speed of these interactions suggests potential communication between the groups, raising further suspicions.

Authorities have also noted that several suspects arrested in connection with these incidents are teenagers. Experts believe this reflects a broader pattern of hybrid warfare, where young individuals are recruited—often for payment—to carry out small-scale or improvised attacks.

At the same time, some analysts suggest the group may have been loosely organized, pointing to the use of translation tools in its statements. This has led to speculation that the group’s structure could be designed to create the appearance of Iranian involvement without clear attribution.

Security expert كون آرتسما from the Clingendael Instituut noted that the incidents align with Iran’s known methods. He highlighted past cases in the Netherlands where intelligence agency AIVD linked assassination attempts to Iran, indicating a history of such activities.

However, proving direct involvement remains difficult. According to experts, Iran often operates through indirect networks, making it challenging to establish clear responsibility. These methods can include subtle operations as well as more extreme actions such as targeted killings or kidnappings.

Journalist ناصر عزيز, who fled Iran and now lives in the Netherlands, claims he has personally experienced threats and violence linked to the regime. He said he has been targeted for continuing to criticize Iranian authorities and that even his family in Iran has been threatened.

While Dutch authorities have provided protection in some cases, experts warn that it is impossible to safeguard all individuals at risk. Despite ongoing threats, عزيز says he remains cautious but determined to continue his work.
