The winter storm Gortiti paralyzes northern Holland with snow and biting winds.
The Netherlands is preparing for its fifth day of snow this week, with the arrival of storm Gortiti bringing 5–15 cm of snow, strong winds, and icy conditions, with temperatures dropping below -10°C and a wind chill of -8°C in the northern provinces.
An orange warning has been issued by KNMI for the provinces of Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, and the Wadden Islands starting at midnight. NS northern trains will operate on a limited schedule, with some lines temporarily disconnected from the national network, forcing travelers from Groningen and Friesland to transfer in Zwolle.
The heavy snow combined with strong easterly winds will cause snow accumulation that may close roads and slow down traffic. In the Wadden Islands, wind speeds may exceed 75 km/h, creating blizzard-like conditions. Authorities have warned that roads, sidewalks, and bike paths will be very slippery and dangerous.
The central and southern provinces will experience rain on Friday morning turning into snow as temperatures drop to around 0°C, creating hazardous travel conditions on roads and bike paths. Drivers and cyclists are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially in areas where previous snow is still present.
The severe cold will continue over the weekend. The maximum temperatures on Saturday will range from 1°C in Western Zeeland to -2°C in the eastern and northern regions, while Sunday will see widespread frost with temperatures dropping below -10°C and some areas below -15°C. Despite the severe cold, sunshine is expected in most areas.
