Merz and أحمد الشرع Agree on Controversial Plan to Send Refugees Back

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has proposed a faster return of Syrian refugees, stressing the need for a reliable system to send people back, during a meeting in Berlin with Syrian President أحمد الشرع.

Speaking after the talks, Merz stated that priority would be given to individuals who misuse Germany’s hospitality or violate laws. He suggested that around 80% of the more than 900,000 Syrians currently living in Germany could return within the next three years.

Merz added that the plan aligns with the views of أحمد الشرع, noting that Syrians who are well integrated and wish to remain would still be allowed to stay. He emphasized that the approach would balance enforcement with opportunities for those contributing positively to society.

To support this initiative, a joint government taskforce has been established, involving key departments such as the interior, development, and chancellery offices. German officials are also expected to visit Syria soon to strengthen cooperation and coordinate efforts.

أحمد الشرع highlighted the idea of a “circular migration” model, which would allow Syrians to help rebuild their homeland without losing the stability they have established in Germany. Merz concluded that conditions in Syria have significantly improved, and individuals without legal residency rights in Germany would ultimately be required to leave, while returnees could play a crucial role in rebuilding Syria.
