A minor Austrian supporter of the Islamic State is in custody after a terrorist plot.

Austrian authorities announced the arrest of a 17-year-old Austrian youth in the city of Linz, after suspecting him of planning a terrorist attack targeting security personnel in Austria. The Ministry of the Interior stated that the arrest took place at the beginning of December, and that the young man is currently in pre-trial detention by order of the public prosecutor in Linz.

According to official information, the arrest came after joint security investigations between the State Security Directorate, the Intelligence Directorate, and the Extremism Combat Directorate in the state, following the monitoring of extremist activity by the young man on social media, where he was posting propaganda materials linked to the Islamic State organization.

Investigations revealed that the accused did not only publish extremist content, but also showed tangible intentions to carry out an attack, and the relevant authorities found specific plans targeting elements of the security forces within the country. The investigations also revealed that the young man discussed the idea of traveling to areas under the control of the organization, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior.

In the middle of the text, according to what the Ministry of Interior announced, the authorities carried out a legal search operation at the young man's residence after obtaining a judicial permit. The operation resulted in the seizure of multiple pieces of evidence, including several electronic media. On his mobile phone, investigators found propaganda materials for the organization as well as video recordings of his own production, one of which is believed to document his declaration of loyalty to the organization.

The security authorities indicated that the pattern of the materials seized resembles contents previously found with individuals involved in planning terrorist attacks. It was recalled that an incident was thwarted in the summer of 2024 when a potential attack targeting artistic events in Vienna was prevented. According to the assessment of the State Security Directorate, the young man shows a high level of ideological extremism of an Islamic nature, and the analysis of the seized data and technical investigations are still ongoing.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed that the case highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating terrorism, explaining that the close coordination between Austrian security agencies and their Moroccan counterparts played a key role in reaching the investigation results and preventing the attack.

For his part, the Minister of State for Constitutional Protection, Jörg Leichtfried, praised the work of the investigators, considering that early and professional intervention prevented a terrorist attack and saved innocent lives. He pointed out that the spread of extremist propaganda through social media networks is a driving factor for radicalization, calling for a comprehensive approach to address this phenomenon that includes tightening control over extremist content and enhancing awareness and media skills among users.

In turn, the Director General of Public Security, Franz Ruf, confirmed that the firm measures in this case send a clear message that violent extremism and terrorism have no place in Austria, appreciating the cooperation between various national and international security agencies.

The Governor of Upper Austria, Thomas Stelzer, commented on the issue, emphasizing that security agencies play a crucial role in protecting society, and affirming that the rule of law will deal firmly with any threat to the country's security or the safety of its citizens.
