Gas reserves in Germany face a critical test amid a harsh winter

Gas reserves in Germany fell to over 30% in February, raising concerns about whether supplies would meet demand if the cold wave continues. However, officials and experts assure that the energy system remains stable.

The decline in reserves comes as Germany continues its transition away from Russian energy. Since 2022, gas imports have diversified to include the United States and Norway, along with LNG shipments across the sea, with rapid commissioning and operation of terminals to meet demand.

Officials insist that supplies are secure. Susan Ungrad from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) explained that the LNG infrastructure and advanced Norwegian gas pipelines are key factors in achieving stability. Feti Wolf from the Federal Network Agency agreed, noting that pipelines and imports from neighboring countries enhance supply stability.

Industrial experts remain confident. Olaf Gier from Arthur D. Little stated that current reserves are sufficient under normal conditions even if cold spells last for a week or two. Oscar Borman from the Gas and Hydrogen Industry Association added that legal storage levels have been met, and the sector is capable of responding quickly to sudden increases in demand.

The storage system works by collecting surplus gas in the summer when consumption is low and withdrawing it in the winter when demand is high. Sebastian Heinemann from the Initiative Energien Speichern explained that imports remain stable throughout the year, while seasonal fluctuations in consumption are managed efficiently. Gas prices remain a challenge, as high summer costs have sometimes exceeded winter selling prices, although market mechanisms ensure the continued effectiveness of storage.

In the future, analysts warn that a decline in inventory at the end of winter will require precise replenishment, supported by attractive wholesale prices. Geier emphasized the need for more flexibility, expanding storage capacities, and actively managing demand. Expanding alternative energy sources, such as converting heating to electricity, is also essential for enhancing Germany's long-term energy security.
