Threats at the "Schweinetreff" summit: German police arrest suspects after nationwide panic

German authorities dismantled a group responsible for hundreds of threatening emails that caused nationwide panic. The fake threats forced the evacuation of schools, shopping centers, and train stations in Germany and Austria, leading to widespread emergency responses.

Investigators in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, and Hesse searched the homes of four suspects and a minor witness in Saxony-Anhalt. The suspects include a 23-year-old man from Frankfurt, a 20-year-old man from Dortmund, and two 16-year-old teenagers from North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. Investigations are still ongoing.

The group is believed to have coordinated its activities through a closed group called "Schweinetreff" (Pig Summit). Authorities believe they planned and executed threats from home computers, aiming to provoke as much public fear as possible and stimulate widespread emergency responses, according to the Central Cybercrime Unit (ZIT).

The threats led to the evacuation of several locations, including the Limbecker Platz shopping center in Essen, the Neunkirchen train station, and a large shopping center between Halle and Leipzig. Bomb disposal teams were deployed, but no explosives were found. These hoaxes caused significant financial losses and noticeable psychological stress.

Officials confirmed that the suspects acted out of pleasure and publicity, not for political reasons, although some messages indicated Islamic intentions. Sven Korinbach, Deputy Head of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), stated that the operation proves that the internet is not a lawless zone and that such actions carry serious consequences.
