Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become the leading country in Europe in the field of AI-related data centers. The objective is for Finland to hold a strong position in this sector by as early as the spring of 2026.
The increase in the number and size of data centers also signifies a significant change in electricity consumption. In 2023, Finland's data centers consumed approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. Estimates suggest that this amount will grow significantly over the coming years.
Forecasts indicate that electricity consumption will rise to 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth is driven in particular by the high computing power required for artificial intelligence, which necessitates large and efficient server centers to operate.
Finland's strengths as a location for data centers include a stable electricity grid, a cool climate that helps with equipment cooling, and a skilled workforce. These factors make the country an attractive destination for international technology companies.
However, the increase in electricity consumption poses challenges for energy production. Finland must ensure that sufficient and clean energy is available so that data center operations remain sustainable and economically viable in the future.
