Illegal online wildlife trade threatens biodiversity
According to a recent study, the illegal wildlife trade has increasingly shifted to the internet. This development poses serious risks to biodiversity, ecosystems, and animal welfare.
Online trade is difficult to monitor, which makes protecting endangered species challenging. According to experts, the illegal trade does not only endanger individual animal species, but it can also destabilize the balance of entire habitats.
The study also highlights significant health risks. The illegal wildlife trade can promote the spread of diseases from animals to humans, which is a global public health concern. Although the phenomenon is global, its effects also extend to Finland, as international trade moves rapidly across borders.
Authorities and international organizations are now striving to strengthen oversight on digital platforms. The goal is to cut off illegal trade routes and protect nature more effectively in the future.
