Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become Europe's leading country in the field of data centers required for artificial intelligence. By the spring of 2026, Finland aims to strengthen its position as a hub in the sector, attracting investments and technological expertise.
Data center operations require vast amounts of electrical energy, and the growth of the industry is directly reflected in Finland's electricity consumption. In 2023, the country's data centers consumed approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. Forecasts indicate that this amount will increase significantly in the coming years.
According to expert estimates, the electricity consumption of data centers could rise to as much as 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth reflects the rapid development of artificial intelligence and digitalization, which continuously require more computing power and storage capacity.
Finland's advantages are considered to be its stable energy production and cool climate, which helps keep data center equipment cool in an energy-efficient manner. These factors make the country an attractive destination for large international technology companies.
However, the growing need for electricity poses challenges for Finland's power grid and energy production. In the coming years, it will be important to ensure that sufficient electricity is available and that it is produced sustainably so that Finland can achieve its goals as a hub for the AI industry.
