Dozens of salmonella cases detected in Finland during the spring

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) has reported a new cluster of cases detected in Finland during the spring of 2026. The infection is caused by the Salmonella Bovismorbificans bacterium, which has spread among several people.

According to the authorities, a total of 64 salmonella cases linked to this same bacterial strain were confirmed in the country. The cases came to light over the course of the spring, and health authorities have been investigating the situation closely to determine the source of the infections.

Salmonella is an intestinal bacterium that typically causes abdominal symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. Although most of those affected recover from the illness on their own, authorities remind the public that good hand hygiene and careful food preparation are the best ways to prevent infections.

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare continues to monitor the situation and will provide information on any potential new guidelines, should they arise. At present, authorities have not reported any serious health consequences, but Finns are advised to exercise normal caution when handling food.
