Measles epidemic spreads in New York – authorities declare state of emergency
New York State in the United States has declared a state of emergency due to a measles epidemic. According to authorities, the number of infections has grown alarmingly over the past few months, and the situation now requires special measures to stop the spread of the virus.
This year, a total of 108 cases of measles have been reported in New York. The situation has become more serious, especially since mid-July, as 92 infections have been confirmed during the period starting July 15. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads easily from person to person.
Healthcare experts remind the public that the best way to protect against measles is through vaccination. In Finland, measles occurs very rarely nowadays because the majority of the population has received comprehensive vaccine protection through the national vaccination program. However, travelers should check their own vaccination status before heading abroad.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are working to reach unvaccinated individuals to curb the epidemic. Measles can cause serious complications, which is why high vaccination coverage is important both locally and internationally.
