Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become the leading country in Europe in the field of AI-related data centers. The objective is for Finland to hold a strong position in this sector as early as the spring of 2026.
Data centers require vast amounts of electrical energy to operate. In 2023, the electricity consumption of Finland's data centers was approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh). Estimates suggest that this figure will increase significantly in the coming years.
According to forecasts, electricity consumption will rise to 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth is driven primarily by the rapid development of AI technology and the construction of new, large-scale data centers in Finland.
Finland's strengths as a location for data centers include a stable power grid, a cool climate, and sufficient production of renewable energy. These factors make the country an attractive destination for international technology companies.
Growth in the sector will bring new investments and jobs to Finland. At the same time, however, it requires investments in power grid capacity to ensure that the growing energy demand can be met reliably in the future.
