Finland aims for the top spot in AI data centers – electricity consumption to increase significantly

Finland has set an ambitious goal to become Europe's leading country in the field of AI-related data centers. The objective is for Finland to hold a strong position in this sector by the spring of 2026. The project is part of a broader effort to attract international technology companies and investments to Finland.

However, the increase in the number of data centers means a major shift in the country's electricity consumption. In 2023, Finland's data centers consumed approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. According to forecasts, this amount will grow significantly over the coming years.

According to experts, electricity consumption could rise to as much as 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth is driven specifically by the high computing power required by artificial intelligence, which necessitates a continuous and stable power supply. Finland offers companies a stable operating environment and green energy, which makes the country an attractive destination for large server centers.

The adequacy of power grid capacity and the price of energy are key issues as Finland prepares for the growth in the number of data centers. Authorities and energy companies are currently working to ensure that electricity production and transmission grids can meet the growing demand in the coming years.
