European route E16 expands to Finland in March
Finland's road network will undergo a significant change at the beginning of March, as European route 16, or the E16, will now extend into Finland. The Government issued an official decree on the matter on February 5, 2026.
The new decree will enter into force on March 5, 2026. With this decision, Finland joins this international road network, which improves connections between neighboring countries. The E16 is an important route that connects several European countries to each other.
European routes are international arterial roads intended to facilitate traffic and the transport of goods between states. Expanding the road network into Finland is part of a broader effort to develop Nordic infrastructure and streamline cross-border traffic.
The change does not require immediate action from motorists, but it will clarify international route options. Authorities believe that the new road connection will strengthen Finland's role as part of the European transport network and promote tourism and trade.
