Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become Europe's leading country in the field of AI-related data centers. The objective is to achieve a significant position in the industry by the spring of 2026. Finland's strengths are considered to be its stable operating environment, skilled workforce, and excellent opportunities for producing clean energy.
The electricity consumption of data centers is set to increase significantly in the coming years. In 2023, Finland's data centers consumed approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. According to forecasts, this figure will rise to 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth reflects the rapid development of artificial intelligence and digitalization.
High electricity consumption poses challenges for the power grid and energy production. For data centers to operate efficiently and sustainably, Finland must ensure a sufficient and affordable supply of electricity. Investments in renewable energy, such as wind power, play a key role in achieving this goal.
This development also brings economic opportunities. The construction and maintenance of data centers create new jobs and strengthen Finland's role in the international technology network. The coming years will show how well Finland succeeds in meeting the growing demand and competition in the European market.
