Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare: Two Finns exposed to hantavirus

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) announced on Friday that two Finnish individuals have potentially been exposed to hantavirus. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and investigating the circumstances of the exposure.

Hantaviruses are viruses that generally spread through rodents, such as voles and mice. Humans can become infected by inhaling dust containing the virus, which may be stirred up from rodent droppings or bedding during cleaning.

In Finland, the most common hantavirus is the Puumala virus, which causes nephropathia epidemica (a mild form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome). It typically causes sudden fever, headache, abdominal pain, and sometimes kidney symptoms. However, most infections are mild, and severe cases are rare.

THL reminds the public to exercise caution when cleaning rodent nests or droppings. It is advisable to avoid raising dust into the air, for example, by wetting the area to be cleaned with water before clearing it. Maintaining good hand hygiene is also important when working near rodents.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the matter and will provide further information if the situation changes. At present, there are no signs that the virus has spread more widely among the population.
