Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become the leading country in Europe in the field of AI-related data centers. The objective is for Finland to be in a strong position in this sector by the spring of 2026.
Data centers require a significant amount of electrical energy to operate. In 2023, the electricity consumption of Finland's data centers was approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh). Estimates suggest that this figure will increase significantly in the coming years.
According to forecasts, electricity consumption could rise to 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth illustrates the scale of the investments required by AI technology and its associated infrastructure.
Finland's advantages are considered to be its stable operating environment, skilled workforce, and the opportunity to utilize clean energy. These factors make the country an attractive destination for international technology companies.
However, the growing demand for electricity poses challenges for Finland's power grid and energy production. Over the next few years, it will be essential to ensure that energy production keeps pace with the speed of technological development.
