Study: Labels on alcoholic beverages rarely communicate health risks

According to a recent study, labels on alcoholic beverages rarely provide sufficient information about the health risks of drinking. Although alcohol is linked to many diseases, such as cancer and heart conditions, consumers receive little help from this information while browsing store shelves.

The study examined the labeling of alcohol products in various countries. The results showed that the majority of labels focus only on the product's taste, production process, or brand marketing. Warnings about, for example, the cancer risk caused by alcohol are almost entirely absent from nearly all products.

In Finland, alcohol legislation is strict, and the discussion regarding the harms of alcohol is ongoing. Healthcare experts have long called for clearer communication about the risks of alcohol. Currently, in Finland, alcohol packaging primarily contains information only about alcohol content and potential allergens.

Many experts believe that clearer warning labels could help consumers make healthier choices. Similar warnings are already widely used for products such as tobacco, where health effects are clearly displayed on the side of the packaging.

The authors of the study hope that the results will spark discussion among legislators. The goal is for consumers in the future to have a better opportunity to understand the true health effects of alcohol consumption before making a purchasing decision.
