Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become Europe's leading country in the field of AI-related data centers. The objective is for Finland to be in a strong position in this sector as early as the spring of 2026. The project is part of a broader effort to leverage the country's stable energy production and technological expertise.
The increase in the number of data centers also signifies a significant shift in electricity consumption. In 2023, Finland's data centers consumed approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. According to expert estimates, this figure will increase significantly over the coming years.
By 2030, electricity consumption is forecast to rise to as much as 5–6 terawatt-hours. This growth is driven in particular by the high computing power required by AI technology, which needs a lot of energy and modern infrastructure to function.
Finland's key strengths are considered to be its green electricity and cool climate, which helps keep servers cool in an energy-efficient manner. These factors make the country an attractive destination for international tech giants looking for sustainable locations for their data centers.
This development brings both opportunities and challenges. While the investments strengthen Finland's economy and technological position, they also require the strengthening of the power grid and careful planning to ensure that energy supply remains stable in the future.
