Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become the leading country in Europe in the field of AI-related data centers. The country aims to strengthen its position as a developer of digital infrastructure by the spring of 2026.
The increase in the number of data centers also means a significant change in electricity consumption. In 2023, Finland's data centers consumed approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. Forecasts suggest that this figure will grow significantly in the coming years.
According to experts, electricity consumption could rise to as much as 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth is driven specifically by the high computing power required by AI technology, which needs a lot of energy and modern facilities to operate.
Finland's strengths are considered to be its stable energy production and cool climate, which helps to cool servers energy-efficiently. These factors make the country an attractive destination for international technology giants.
This development brings both opportunities and challenges. While data centers create new jobs and investments, it must also be ensured that the power grid can meet the growing demand sustainably.
