Finland aims for the top spot in Europe for AI data centers
Finland has set an ambitious goal to become the leading country in Europe in the field of AI-related data centers. The objective is for Finland to hold a strong position in this sector by the spring of 2026.
The increase in the number and size of data centers also means a significant rise in electricity consumption. In 2023, Finland's data centers consumed approximately 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity. According to forecasts, this amount will grow significantly in the coming years.
Estimates suggest that electricity consumption could rise to as much as 5–6 terawatt-hours by 2030. This growth is driven particularly by the high computing power required by artificial intelligence, which needs large and efficient server centers to operate.
Finland's strengths as a location for data centers include a stable power grid, a cool climate that helps with equipment cooling, and a skilled workforce. These factors make the country an attractive destination for international technology companies.
However, the increase in electricity consumption poses challenges for Finland's energy production. In the coming years, it will be important to ensure that the country has sufficient clean and affordable energy to meet the growing needs of data centers.
