Digital and Population Data Services Agency seeks information on nearly 2,000 centenarian Finns
The Digital and Population Data Services Agency has launched an investigation to verify the life status of nearly 2,000 Finns living abroad. These are individuals who have reached at least 100 years of age, but whose current whereabouts or vital status remain uncertain in the agency's records.
Finland's Population Information System currently contains thousands of individuals who moved abroad decades ago. In many cases, authorities have not received updates on their life status for a long time. Because these individuals are of a very advanced age, the agency wants to ensure that the population data reflects reality.
The investigation is challenging, as many Finns moved abroad long before the era of modern digital systems. The agency is collaborating with authorities in various countries to determine whether these individuals are still alive or if information regarding their deaths has been reported from abroad to Finland.
The Digital and Population Data Services Agency reminds Finns living abroad that it is important to report their life events, such as changes of address or additions to the family, to Finnish authorities as well. Up-to-date information helps authorities maintain population records reliably and avoid erroneous data in the registers.
