Finland receives its first F-35 fighter jets
The largest procurement in the history of the Finnish Air Force reached a significant milestone on Friday as two new F-35 fighter jets arrived in Finland. These high-tech aircraft are part of the Finnish Defence Forces' modernization program, which aims to strengthen the country's air defense for the coming decades.
The journey of the aircraft to Finland did not go entirely according to plan, however. A third fighter jet had to remain in the Azores due to a technical fault. According to the Defence Forces, this is a situation typical of normal flight operations, and the aircraft is expected to continue its journey to Finland as soon as the fault has been repaired.
The acquisition of F-35 fighter jets has sparked widespread discussion in Finland. The aircraft represent the latest technology, and they are believed to significantly improve Finland's ability to monitor and protect its airspace. At the same time, the procurement ties Finland closely to international cooperation, as the maintenance and operation of the aircraft require continuous communication with the manufacturing countries and other user nations.
The new fighter jets will gradually replace the current Hornet fleet. The transition period requires significant investment and training for personnel, but authorities believe that the F-35 system offers the best possible protection in a changing global security environment. Over the next few years, more aircraft will arrive in Finland until the entire fleet has been renewed.
