Finland's population grew in the first half of the year due to immigration
Finland's population has grown by a total of 6,443 people during the period of January to August 2024. According to Statistics Finland, however, this population growth is not due to the birth rate, as more people continue to die in Finland than are born.
The main reason for the increase in the population has been net migration from abroad. Significantly more people have moved to Finland during the beginning of the year than have left. This international migration has kept the population growing, even though the natural population change has remained negative.
The decline in the birth rate has been a long-term phenomenon in Finland that still continues. When the number of deaths exceeds the number of births, the population structure becomes more challenging. Without international migration, Finland's population would have turned to a decline.
Statistics show that immigration is currently a key factor in Finland's population development. Although the population is growing, the low level of the birth rate remains one of the most significant demographic policy issues in society.
