Number of asylum applications decreased in the European Union
A total of 42,525 first-time asylum applications were filed in the European Union in May 2026. According to statistics, the number of applications has decreased significantly compared to last year.
According to recent data, the number of asylum applications fell by 22 percent compared to the same period last year. Compared to April, the number of applications also saw a slight decrease of about 2 percent.
The figures reflect the trend in the number of asylum seekers across the entire EU. Although the number of applications is on the decline, the situation remains under monitoring by the authorities.
In Finland and other EU countries, the asylum policy situation is being closely monitored. Changes in the number of applications directly affect the burden on reception systems and the work of authorities in various member states.
