Reform of wellbeing services counties progresses, but challenges remain to be solved
The reform of Finland's wellbeing services counties has progressed significantly, but achieving the full objectives still requires corrective measures. According to a recent interim evaluation by the Government, the wellbeing services counties have succeeded in creating a new structure for social, health, and rescue services, but there is still work to be done, particularly in improving the quality and accessibility of services.
A key goal of the reform has been to standardize services across the country and ensure that every Finn receives the help they need at the right time. According to the evaluation, the administrative transition has proceeded as planned, but challenges have emerged at the practical level, relating to issues such as staff shortages and financial frameworks.
The report emphasizes that the wellbeing services counties must now focus on increasing the effectiveness of their services. This means that operational methods must be made more efficient so that limited resources are sufficient to meet the growing service needs of the population. Particular attention must be paid to preventive work, which will reduce the need for more intensive services in the future.
Although the reform is still in its early stages, its success is critical for the Finnish welfare society. The Government is monitoring the situation closely and providing support to the wellbeing services counties so that they can make the necessary changes. Over the coming years, we will see how the wellbeing services counties succeed in balancing their finances and securing high-quality services for all residents.
