Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare: Two Finns exposed to hantavirus

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) announced on Friday that two Finns have potentially been exposed to hantavirus. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, but at present, there are no signs of a wider threat to the population.

Hantaviruses are viruses that generally spread through the feces, urine, or saliva of rodents, such as voles. People can become infected by inhaling dust containing the virus, for example, while cleaning storage areas or cabins where rodents have been present.

The most common hantavirus in Finland is the Puumala virus, which causes nephropathia epidemica (a mild form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome). Symptoms of the illness include high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and sometimes kidney problems. Most patients recover well from the disease with rest and symptomatic treatment.

THL reminds the public that the risk of infection is low. However, one should avoid raising dust while cleaning. For instance, dry brushing should be avoided in spaces that show signs of rodents. Wiping surfaces with a damp cloth is a safer way to clean.

Authorities will continue to monitor the condition of the exposed individuals. THL will provide further information on the matter should new significant details emerge.
