UN: The threat of terrorism has become increasingly fragmented
A representative from the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism stated on Friday that the threat of terrorism globally has become more fragmented than before. According to experts, traditional terrorist organizations have changed their operating methods, making it more difficult to monitor the security situation than in the past.
Technological development is one key reason for this change. The internet and social media enable radical ideas to spread rapidly across borders. This means that the threat of terrorism is no longer tied only to specific geographical areas, but can emerge almost anywhere.
In this new environment, terrorism has also become more difficult to predict. Smaller groups and individual actors are taking advantage of digital tools, which challenges the traditional methods used by authorities to prevent attacks. The UN emphasizes that international cooperation is now more important than ever.
Although the threat has changed its form, authorities around the world continue their efforts to ensure security. In Finland, too, the international situation is being closely monitored, and assessments are being made regarding how the changing operational environment affects national security.
