Sophie Binet denounces industrial pollution in Saint-Gaudens
The Secretary General of the CGT, Sophie Binet, visited the Fibre Excellence factory site this week, located in Saint-Gaudens in the south of France. This visit comes amid deep concerns regarding the environmental impact of this pulp mill on the surrounding area.
During her trip, the union leader publicly stated that "pollution is underway." She emphasized the urgency of the situation, pointing to industrial discharges affecting air and water quality in the Garonne valley. According to her, environmental standards are not being sufficiently respected by the company.
For its part, the management of Fibre Excellence rejects these accusations. The company asserts that it complies with current regulations and points out that it has invested millions of euros to modernize its facilities and reduce its ecological footprint. It insists that the factory is an essential economic engine for the region, employing hundreds of workers.
This conflict illustrates the growing difficulty of reconciling the maintenance of industrial employment with environmental protection in France. Local residents, meanwhile, are demanding more transparency regarding pollution data and stricter monitoring by local authorities and the State.
The situation remains under close observation. State services are expected to conduct new analyses in the coming weeks to precisely assess the state of the pollution and determine whether sanctions or corrective measures are necessary to protect the health of the inhabitants.
