Green light for Amazon Leo: a new era for internet in France
American giant Amazon has received official authorization to launch its new technological project, Amazon Leo, on French territory. This decision, recently announced, marks a significant milestone for the digital landscape of France. This ambitious project aims to transform the way citizens access the global network, particularly in the most isolated regions.
The system relies on the use of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Unlike traditional communication satellites, which are located very far from Earth, these new devices orbit at a much lower altitude. This proximity makes it possible to offer a much faster and more stable internet connection, thereby reducing data transmission delays.
In France, this technology is particularly awaited in "white zones"—rural areas where fiber optics and mobile networks are still insufficient. Thanks to the deployment of Amazon Leo, residents of these municipalities will be able to benefit from high-quality broadband access. This represents a major opportunity for local economic development and remote work outside of major metropolitan areas.
Amazon's arrival in this market also strengthens competition in the satellite internet sector. The Starlink service, led by Elon Musk, has already been available in France for some time. The telecommunications regulatory authority carefully examined Amazon's application to ensure that the project complies with environmental standards and national communication frequencies.
The deployment of the necessary infrastructure is expected to begin in the coming months. For French consumers, this new offering means more choice and potentially more attractive rates in the future. It is another step toward the goal of universal digital access, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their place of residence, can stay connected to the modern world.
