Aude: Wildfire contained and drowning warnings
Authorities are calling for vigilance in the face of summer risks as the first major wildfires hit southern France. While the fire in the Aude is now under control, caution remains necessary for swimming in open waters.
Be vigilant if you live in or are traveling to the South: a fire burned through 900 hectares in the Aude before being "contained," meaning its progression has stopped although it is not yet extinguished. Laurent Nuñez, head of security, expressed concern for the rest of the season due to the drought. Authorities are reminding the public of the importance of following safety instructions and any potential restrictions on access to wooded areas.
This vigilance extends to water activities, as knowing how to swim is no longer enough to rule out all danger in lakes and rivers. Santé publique France, the national health agency, warns that nearly half of fatal drownings now occur in these natural bodies of water. Unpredictable currents and temperature differences can catch swimmers off guard, making it essential to use supervised areas for your safety.
