Rassemblement National trial: what you need to know
The trial of the Rassemblement National (RN) recently began in Paris. This legal case concerns suspicions of the embezzlement of public funds at the European Parliament. The party is accused of having used funds intended for parliamentary assistants to pay employees working directly for the party in France.
In total, twenty-five people have been sent to the criminal court. Among them are Marine Le Pen, a central figure of the party, as well as other elected officials and former Members of the European Parliament. The alleged acts took place between 2004 and 2016. The party firmly denies these accusations, asserting that the work performed by the assistants was genuine.
The court must now determine whether these contracts were fictitious or not. If the judges find that the funds were embezzled, the defendants face fines, prison sentences, and also penalties of ineligibility. This latter sanction could have significant consequences for the political future of those involved.
This trial is being followed very closely by the French political class and the public. It raises questions about the financing of political parties and compliance with European rules. The proceedings are expected to last several weeks before the court delivers its final decision.
