Pesticides: A record number of compensation claims in France
The Pesticide Victims Compensation Fund (FIVP) reached a symbolic milestone in 2025. According to its latest annual report, the organization received more than 1,000 applications for the recognition of illnesses linked to exposure to plant protection products. This is a first since the fund's creation, marking a significant increase in files submitted by agricultural workers.
This fund was established to support people suffering from pathologies caused by the use of pesticides in the course of their professional activities. The claims mainly concern farmers, agricultural employees, or former operators who believe that their health has deteriorated due to these chemical products. The most frequently reported illnesses include certain cancers, neurological disorders, or respiratory problems.
The increase in the number of files is partly explained by better information for victims regarding their rights. Numerous awareness campaigns have been conducted in recent years to encourage those affected to come forward. Furthermore, administrative procedures have been simplified to allow for faster access to financial aid and medical recognition.
Faced with this situation, health authorities continue to analyze the data to better understand the impact of pesticides on public health. This report highlights the importance of prevention and the protection of workers in the agricultural sector. The French government remains under pressure to strengthen safety measures and encourage the transition toward agricultural practices that are less dependent on chemical products.
