Heatwave: 1,000 Deaths & Global Diplomacy
France is recording a high excess mortality rate due to the heat, while several diplomatic fronts are opening in the Middle East and Ukraine. Announcements of attack suspensions and a willingness to negotiate were expressed this weekend.
The heatwave death toll has risen to approximately 1,000 additional deaths since last Wednesday compared to previous months. This increase in mortality is accompanied by increased pressure on hospital emergency services.
Parallel to this health crisis, international diplomacy is active in the Middle East, where the United States and Iran announced on Sunday that they are suspending their mutual attacks. In contrast, the situation remains precarious between Israel and Lebanon, where new strikes and the Lebanese Parliament's rejection of the text threaten the recently signed agreement.
This atmosphere of negotiation is also found in the Ukrainian conflict, with Russian President Vladimir Putin saying he is ready to receive American emissaries for discussions. On the ground, however, Moscow admits that Ukrainian strikes against its oil refineries are now causing fuel shortages in Russia.
Further east, violence persists with overnight Pakistani strikes in Afghanistan that killed at least 25 people during an operation against a dissident Taliban faction.
