Social media: Constitutional Council rejects ban for those under 15
The French Constitutional Council recently made an important decision regarding the use of social media by minors. The judges officially rejected the bill that aimed to ban access to digital platforms for young people under the age of 15.
The main objective of this law was to protect children against inappropriate content and the risks associated with early exposure to social media. Legislators thus wished to strengthen the digital security of minors by imposing stricter control on online registrations.
However, the Constitutional Council deemed that this measure was not in accordance with the Constitution. According to experts, it is technically very difficult to verify the actual age of users without infringing on their privacy or their freedom of expression on the Internet.
This decision highlights the complexity of regulating the digital world while respecting fundamental rights. For now, no general ban will be applied, but the debate on the protection of minors online remains a priority for the French government in the coming months.
