Wildfires in Europe: what is the real impact of climate change?
Southwestern France, much like several regions in Spain, is facing a worrying increase in wildfire risks. In recent years, episodes of "mega-fires" have become more frequent, raising many questions about the root causes of these natural disasters.
According to recent scientific studies, climate change plays a decisive role in this situation. Weather conditions favorable to the ignition of fires, such as intense heat and prolonged drought, are now twice as likely in southwestern France as they were in the past.
In Spain, the situation is even more critical, with the probability multiplied by twenty in certain geographical areas. These figures confirm that the rise in global temperatures is permanently altering European forest ecosystems, making vegetation more vulnerable to flames.
Faced with this reality, French and European authorities must adapt their prevention strategies. Forest management and the preparation of emergency services have become major priorities to protect populations and limit the environmental damage caused by these increasingly intense wildfires.
