TGV M: SNCF's new high-speed train faces significant delays
French travelers will have to wait a little longer before boarding the "TGV M." This new model, designed by Alstom for the SNCF, is at the center of a controversy due to mounting delivery delays. Initially scheduled to run on French tracks starting in 2024, the project is now more than two years behind schedule.
The SNCF explains that these delays are due to complex technical difficulties during the design and manufacturing phase. The TGV M, also known as "Avelia Horizon," is an innovative train that promises to be more eco-friendly, spacious, and modular than current trainsets. However, developing this cutting-edge technology is taking more time than the engineers had anticipated.
This delay poses a logistical challenge for the national railway company. The SNCF was counting on these new trains to gradually replace older trainsets and increase transport capacity on the busiest lines, particularly those heading to the south and west of France. With fewer trains available, managing traffic during peak periods, such as school holidays, is becoming more difficult.
Despite these obstacles, testing continues on the railway tracks to ensure the safety and reliability of the future trains. Authorities and manufacturers are now working together to accelerate the certification process. Commercial service is now expected for 2026, a date that users are eagerly awaiting to modernize their daily travel.
