Fire in the Var: situation under control after an intense night
A major fire broke out on July 22, 2026, in the Gros Bessillon massif, located in the Var department. Faced with the rapid spread of the flames, the authorities deployed exceptional resources to protect the inhabitants and the Mediterranean forest.
In total, 1,100 firefighters were mobilized on the ground to fight the blaze. The teams worked throughout the night to contain the fire, aided by weather conditions that improved slightly at dawn, thereby facilitating the work of the firefighters.
At 9 a.m. this morning, the Prefect of the Var provided an update on the situation. Although the fire is not yet completely extinguished, the firefighters have managed to stabilize the most critical areas. No casualties have been reported, and the preventive evacuations carried out during the night ensured the safety of local residents.
However, the authorities remain on maximum alert. Rescue teams will continue their surveillance operations throughout the day to prevent any flare-ups, due to the high risk of drought in the region. The public is urged to follow safety instructions and avoid the area to allow emergency services to work effectively.
