Heatwave: more than 300 drownings recorded in France this summer

France is going through a period of high temperatures that is pushing many citizens to seek coolness near bodies of water. Unfortunately, this search for comfort is accompanied by a worrying human toll. According to the latest data, the number of drownings has exceeded the 300 mark since the start of the summer season.

Health authorities and emergency services explain this increase by the combination of the heatwave and reckless behavior. When temperatures climb, more French people go swimming, sometimes in unsupervised areas or without having taken the time to acclimate to the water temperature, which can cause fainting.

Faced with this situation, the government is reiterating the importance of caution. It is strongly advised to prioritize swimming areas supervised by lifeguards and never to leave children unattended, even near small inflatable pools or shallow bodies of water.

Experts also point out that heat-related fatigue reduces vigilance. It is therefore essential to stay hydrated and avoid intense physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day, between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.

As heat episodes are expected to continue in the coming days, authorities are calling for collective vigilance. Water safety remains a priority to prevent moments of relaxation from turning into family tragedies.
