Night work and unconventional hours: a threat to the health of the French
The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (Anses) recently published an alarming report regarding working conditions in France. According to this study, approximately 75% of French workers are currently subject to atypical hours, such as night work, weekends, or highly variable schedules. These rhythms of life, which are becoming increasingly common, pose serious public health problems.
The report emphasizes that these staggered hours severely disrupt the biological clocks of employees. A lack of regular sleep and the difficulty of maintaining a stable lifestyle significantly increase the risk of chronic diseases. Among the most frequent consequences, experts cite cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, as well as mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.
Beyond physical health, these professional constraints also affect the social and family lives of workers. It often becomes difficult to reconcile irregular hours with daily activities or time spent with family. This situation can lead to a feeling of isolation and chronic fatigue that directly impacts the quality of life of French employees.
Faced with these results, Anses is calling on companies and public authorities to act quickly. The agency recommends better regulating these hours and proposing adapted preventive measures to protect the most exposed employees. According to the experts, it is essential to rethink the organization of work to limit the harmful long-term effects on health.
