Russia's Economy: Between Propaganda and the Reality of Sanctions
Since the beginning of the war against Ukraine, the Russian economy has been at the center of international attention. The government in Moscow regularly claims that Western sanctions have almost no impact. However, behind these official statements lies a complicated economic situation that many experts view critically.
A central point of Russian propaganda is the narrative of a strong and independent economy. The regime disseminates news stating that the country remains stable despite international isolation. These reports are intended both to reassure the domestic population and to project strength to foreign countries.
In reality, Russia has massively shifted its economy to a so-called war economy. This means that a large portion of state funds flows directly into the production of weapons and military equipment. While this provides short-term growth in statistics, these investments are missing in other areas such as education, health, or civilian infrastructure.
Additionally, Western sanctions are causing long-term problems. Russia has almost no access to modern technologies and spare parts from Europe or the USA. This affects not only industry but also people's daily lives, for example, in the repair of aircraft or medical devices. At the same time, high inflation is causing food and services to become increasingly expensive.
In summary, it can be said that Russia's economic stability is often only superficial. The focus on the military and isolation from the global market present the country with enormous challenges. Whether the Russian economy can withstand this pressure in the long term remains one of the most important questions for the coming years.
