Discussion on sick notes: Return to mandatory medical certificates from the first day?
German politics is currently debating an important change in the healthcare system. The new government is planning to tighten the rules for sick notes. In the future, employees would be required to submit a medical certificate starting from the very first day of their illness.
Previously, it was possible in many cases to report sick to a doctor by phone without having to visit the practice immediately. This regulation was introduced during the pandemic to relieve the burden on medical practices and reduce contacts. The planned change would mean that this unbureaucratic solution would be abolished.
However, medical associations are sharply criticizing this plan. They describe the planned measure as "symbolic politics." The physicians argue that a mandatory examination on the first day of illness unnecessarily fills practices with patients who actually just need rest to recover.
Supporters of the new regulation, on the other hand, hope to see a reduction in absenteeism in companies. They argue that a mandatory certificate from the first day raises the threshold for short-term sick leave and thus stabilizes productivity in the economy.
Whether and when this change will come into effect remains to be seen. The discussion highlights the difficult balancing act between the desire for less bureaucracy in the healthcare system and the goal of making the working world more efficient.
