Blue-green algae alert: Caution when swimming in the Baltic Sea
There is currently cause for caution for vacationers and locals on the German Baltic coast. Blue-green algae have been discovered in several bathing areas north of the city of Lübeck. The authorities have therefore issued official warnings for these regions.
Blue-green algae, which are actually bacteria, multiply particularly quickly in warm temperatures. When they occur in large quantities, they can cause health problems for humans. These include skin irritation, nausea, or allergic reactions after contact with the water.
Although swimming is not currently officially prohibited at any beach on the Baltic Sea, visitors should take the local warnings seriously. Experts advise paying attention to the water: if the water looks greenish or bluish and cloudy, or forms streaks on the surface, it is better not to go into the water.
Caution is particularly advised for children and people with sensitive skin. Anyone who notices symptoms such as a rash or feeling unwell after swimming should see a doctor. Before visiting the beach, it is best to check with local tourist information offices regarding the current water quality at your bathing location.
