DIW Study: Government investment strengthens the German economy
A recent study by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) shows that government investment has a greater impact on economic growth than tax cuts. The experts examined which measures can most effectively support the German economy.
The results clarify that both public investment and government consumption stimulate economic output significantly more than a reduction in taxes. While tax cuts often lead to households saving a portion of the money, government spending flows directly into the economic cycle.
However, the DIW researchers emphasize that the two instruments have different effects. Investments in infrastructure or new technologies usually have a long-term impact and increase the country's productivity. Government consumption, on the other hand, tends to provide a short-term boost to demand.
For German policymakers, this finding is of great importance. In view of current economic challenges, there is now intense debate about how the state should best use its budget to ensure stability and growth in Germany in the long term.
